Brigadier General Joseph G. Balskus is the assistant adjutant general for air and commander, Florida Air National Guard, St. Augustine, Florida.
General Balskus began his military career by joining the United States Air Force in 1979. He graduated from Officer Training School as a second lieutenant in 1980 with the honor of distinguished graduate. He was assigned as an air weapons controller and became combat qualified serving in Osan, Korea, Homestead, Florida and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Following in-residence Squadron Officer School, he was assigned as an associate professor of Aerospace Studies at the Citadel, Military College of South Carolina. General Balskus joined the Florida Air National Guard in 1990. He held numerous leadership and command positions at 125th Fighter Wing and State Headquarters to include the logistics squadron commander, state support group commander, and executive support staff officer. He was assigned as chief of staff on 1 December 2001 and assumed command of the Florida Air National Guard on 1 October 2004. He became the assistant adjutant general for air on 1 October 2006 and retained his role as commander of the Florida Air National Guard.
Of note, in 2007, Brigadier General Balskus was inducted by the Florida Air National Guard as an Honorary Chief Master Sergeant.
